A new study analyzed AI’s impact on the translation industry. Google Translate’s 2016 neural upgrade (predictive AI) cut demand for regular translation on a major freelance platform by about 9%, but had no measurable effect on “transcreation” – creative work like ad copy and poetry that needs cultural adaptation. ChatGPT (generative AI), on the other hand, cuts regular translation by 21% and transcreation by 30%. The “safe line” moved once, expect it to move again – and not just in language translation.
